The Carabinieri and the penitentiary police carried out 38 precautionary measures against as many people, 26 of whom were arrested.
The measures were issued by the district investigating judge at the request of the Catanzaro DDA.
Penitentiary police officers on duty in the capital's prison were involved in the operation, seven of whom were suspended.
The suspects are accused, among other things, of criminal association aimed at corruption and drug trafficking.
Among those arrested is the former director of the
Catanzaro prison, Angela Paravati, 59 years old. Together with the former director, Simona Poli, 46 years old, and Franco Cerminara, 57 years old, respectively, commander and assistant chief of the prison, were arrested. penitentiary police.
The former director is accused, among other things, of having facilitated the escape of a prisoner in March 2022, in collaboration with Simona Poli and Cerminara.
Pre-trial detention in prison has been ordered for Angela Paravati.
The former director Paravati, in particular, is charged with the crimes of external conspiracy, forgery, evasion, ideological falsity and corruption.
In particular, according to the accusation, Among other things, Angela Paravati, at the request of the commander of the penitentiary police Simona Poli, would have authorized the assistant chief Cerminara to accompany a prisoner, Vincenzo Trimarchi, admitted to external work, to view an apartment of his interest without any authorization from the supervising judge.
Trimarchi, however, after viewing the apartment in question, returned to prison and is still detained.
Furthermore, Paravati and Poli allegedly failed to report on the Dap portal a protest carried out by some inmates and, on another occasion, they were slow to include in the same portal the refusal by some inmates to return to their cells.
The accusation of corruption in Paravati is contested in competition with Emanuela Elia, 48 years old, assistant head of the penitentiary police force serving in the regional investigative unit of Calabria, who is only under investigation in the investigation.
Angela Paravati, again according to the accusation, would have facilitated the transfer of Emanuela Elia to the Surveillance Court of Catanzaro in exchange for a stay for herself and her family in a hotel in Pizzo.
Overall, 76 people were investigated in the investigation.
