Very few people like to do it, but for some it is mandatory: the tax return.
What submission deadlines apply?
A tax return often takes a lot of time.
Therefore, everyone who has to submit a declaration should keep a close eye on the submission deadline.
If you let the deadline pass, you risk a late payment penalty from the tax office.
Tax return for 2023 and tax return for 2024
How much time do you have if you are obliged to submit your tax return and want to prepare the return yourself?
The
United Wage Tax Assistance (VLH)
had pointed out which deadlines then apply: The declaration for the 2023 tax year must be submitted to the tax office by August 31, 2024.
Since this date is a Saturday, the latest submission date is the following Monday - and therefore September 2, 2024.
The deadline for submitting the declaration for the 2024 tax year is then July 31, 2025, as the VLH also informed.
The deadline for filing tax returns usually ends on July 31st, i.e. seven months after the end of the year.
What deadline applies to a tax advisor or income tax assistance association?
Taxpayers who have their tax return prepared by a tax advisor or income tax assistance association have more time.
Because then different deadlines apply.
The deadline for tax professionals would usually be the end of February of the year after next.
But the fourth Corona Tax Assistance Act still applies here, as the VLH explained in its announcement.
What should you pay attention to?
You can submit the return for the 2022 tax year by July 31, 2024 using a tax advisor or income tax assistance association.
The VLH also announced that there was time to file the tax return for 2023 “until May 31, 2025 (a Saturday!)”, so June 2, 2025 is crucial (because the deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday , it is postponed to the Monday after the weekend), and you probably still have “until April 30, 2026” to file your tax return for 2024 with the help of a tax professional.

More time to file your tax return voluntarily
Not everyone is required to file a tax return.
Anyone who submits a tax return voluntarily is not bound to the usual filing deadlines - the tax return can be submitted retroactively for up to four years.
