The unemployment rate in the OECD area remained stable at 4.8% in December 2023: this is what the OECD itself reports, specifying that the unemployment rate remained below the symbolic threshold of 5% throughout the course of last year.
In Italy, the Paris-based international body underlines in a note, the unemployment rate in December fell to 7.2% compared to 7.4% in November and 7.6% in October.
More generally, in 2023, the number of unemployed in the OECD area continued to decline for the third consecutive year, falling to 33.2 million people, the lowest level since the series began in 2001. In the European Union and Eurozone, the unemployment rate remained at "historically low" levels, continues the OECD, at 5.9% and 6.4% respectively.
