Bread and grain products are becoming more expensive - to the annoyance of an Aldi customer.

She receives approval online, but also receives some criticism.

Munich - Whether food, energy or gasoline: in 2023, prices across all areas rose by 5.9 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office announced in January.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the inflation rate fell to 2.9 percent in January as a result of lower energy prices, the lowest level since June 2021 (2.4 percent), but food prices continued to rise for the most part.

An Aldi customer also reported this.

On average, food became 3.8 percent more expensive within a year.

The inflation rate was highest, with an increase of 10.2 percent for fruit and eight percent for vegetables.

Bread and other grain products also became more expensive compared to January of the previous year - their price rose by 5.4 percent.

Nevertheless, an Aldi customer recently managed to make a cheap purchase that he “didn’t expect”.

Aldi customer is amazed at the price of bread – “it’s an announcement”

The price increases are also partly visible in the reactions of consumers in posts and comment columns on social media.

A user recently posted a photo of the bread display at her local Aldi branch on the short message service 750 grams loaf.

All three products are priced at 4.35 euros, so the price per kilo for the two 500 gram loaves is 8.70.

The “Gassenhauer” is cheaper at 5.80 euros per kilo.

“Kilos of bread at Aldi 8.70 euros is quite an announcement,” the user comments on the bread prices presented.

In the comments column, another user immediately predicts: “Baking it yourself – comments incoming.” And in doing so, she actually anticipates the advice of some other users to bake bread yourself in your own kitchen instead of the more expensive supermarket bread.

Because that would minimize costs.

One user comments: "That's why I only bake myself. Costs including electricity are 1.90 euros for 750 grams."

Rising bread price in Germany – “These are roughly Swiss prices”

In view of the high bread and grain prices, some other users mockingly recommend switching to cakes instead of bread in the future.

A user also cynically commented that the price of bread was okay because “bread prices are linked to Bitcoin”.

Another even compares the prices for bread at Aldi with Swiss bread prices and posts a photo of an organic pure spelled bread in a Swiss COOP supermarket.

4.50 Swiss francs cost 450 grams, which is equivalent to around 4.75 euros.

“Those are roughly Swiss prices.

It’s not the same bread, but at least,” the user writes.

Rising food prices – Germany in the middle of the EU

According to the latest data from the European Union's statistics institute, Eurostat, the annual inflation rate in the European Union was 3.4 percent in December 2023, up from 3.1 percent in November.

A year earlier it was 10.4 percent.

In addition, Eurostat continually publishes updated data on inflation rates in EU countries with the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP).

According to this, food inflation currently has the lowest overall rate at just 3.6 percentage points; it is also comparatively low in France (4.3) and Finland (5.1).

With an inflation rate of 8.5 percentage points, Germany is in the lower middle range - the highest rate is in Latvia at 17.7.

The price of bread in Germany is rising moderately compared to the EU

But how does this affect various food products in a European comparison, especially the prices of bread and other grain products?

For bread and grain products, inflation is lowest in France at 4.0 percentage points.

Here too, Germany is in the lower midfield for price increases with 8.8 percentage points.

Prices for bread and grain products are currently rising the most

(as of February 1, 2024)

in Hungary (23.3) and Lithuania (23.8).

Compared to many other countries, currently especially those in the south and east of the euro area, the price of bread in Germany is only increasing at a moderate rate.

In Switzerland, the prices for bread and grain products are generally very high compared to EU countries.

In 2022, for example, Swiss food prices exceeded the average prices of the EU countries by 61.1 percent.

Another Aldi customer revealed his very own view of things.

His conclusion: In Germany, food is not too expensive - but too cheap.
