The former boss of the Gloggnitz cheese factory was accused of, among other things, negligent homicide.

However, the judgment is not yet legally binding.

Wiener Neustadt – In the trial involving several deaths and those affected with serious sequelae related to listeria infections, a former cheese factory boss in Austria was sentenced to 13 months in prison on Thursday (February 15).

This is reported by the AFP news agency.

The former boss of the now closed Lower Austrian cheese dairy Gloggnitz was accused of grossly negligent homicide in five cases and grossly negligent bodily harm in four cases.

The defendant had always denied the allegations.

The judgment is not yet legally binding.

A total of five people died as a result of the listeria infection

A strain of Listeria bacteria was discovered in the Lower Austrian cheese factory, which, according to a report submitted to the court, was responsible for several dramatic illnesses.

Among other things, five people died after consuming contaminated products.

The former Gloggnitz company boss is accused of disregarding hygiene regulations and failing to correct defects ordered by the food inspectorate - possibly also for financial reasons.

“It was completely clear that the listeria came from your company,” the single judge said to the defendant when giving reasons for the verdict.

It's not just cheese that is affected by listeria - there was already a wave of recalls of sausage products in January

Listeria is a bacteria that is generally harmless to healthy people.

In high-risk patients, the listeriosis it causes can cause serious health damage.

Severe cases can lead to blood poisoning and inflammation of the brain and meninges.

In some cases, a listeria infection can be fatal.

But listeria is not only found in cheese, but also in meat products.

It was only at the beginning of January that there was a wave of recalls, as a result of which an increasing number of sausage products were recalled in Germany.

Some aspects of the trial were ruled out by the court today.

This affected two listeria infections that were originally included in the criminal complaint, as well as new allegations of infidelity, coercion and completed and attempted bodily harm.

The eliminated points are to be discussed at the regional court in Wiener Neustadt on March 14th.

Other witnesses will also be interviewed on this day.
