Stiftung Warentest has tested three new Amazon televisions.

However, none of the devices are convincing - handling them in particular causes problems.

Munich – If you are about to buy a new television, you can quickly lose track of things: There are different sizes and performances of TV sets.

There is also a wide range in prices.

For this reason, it is important to find out which model is best suited to your needs.

Stiftung Warentest tests a wide variety of products, including headphones recently.

Three models from Amazon's own brand of televisions have now also been tested.

But they disappointed and were unable to achieve top marks.

Stiftung Warentest tests Amazon televisions: These are the models tested

Three Amazon televisions were tested by Stiftung Warentest.

The Amazon Fire TV-4 in size 55 inches, the Amazon Fire TV Omni OLED (also 55 inches) and the smaller - and significantly cheaper - Amazon Fire TV-2 (40 inches).

All three devices were rated satisfactory.

The tested devices at a glance:

  • Amazon Fire TV-4, 55 inches

    (price: 700 euros) –

    grade: 3.1

  • Amazon Fire TV Omni OLED, 55 inches

    (price: 800 euros) –

    grade: 3.2

  • Amazon Fire TV-2, 40 inches

    (price: 350 euros) –

    grade: 3.5

Amazon televisions perform only satisfactorily in Stiftung Warentest: operation causes problems

According to the testers, there are several reasons for the mediocre rating: One point of criticism is the mixed image quality.

Accordingly, the image showed harsh contrasts and unnatural colors.

In addition, details were lost in dark sections of the image and jerking could be seen in fast scenes and camera pans, explained Stiftung Warentest.

The testers also criticized a few things about the sound quality: Since the bass was only low, the tones sounded thin.

In addition, switching between channels took a long time and the channel list was difficult to access.

In addition, the testers believe the operation can be improved.

In general, the menu is more optimized for accessing videos from streaming services, but less for classic television, said Stiftung Warentest.

Further points of criticism: The cheapest Amazon model in the test (Amazon Fire TV-2, 40 inches) does not support UHD or 4K resolution.

The more expensive 55-inch models, however, require a lot of power.

The conclusion from Stiftung Warentest: There are significantly better television sets for the same or similar price.

And there are other concerns from another side: Since some of Amazon's devices have Alexa integrated, many people are concerned about privacy.

Amazon defends itself against Stiftung Warentest ruling

For the sake of completeness, however, it must be mentioned that after the Stiftung Warentest results were published, Amazon clearly contradicted them in parts.

According to Stiftung Warentest, large-scale advertising appeared on Amazon televisions from time to time.

This could at least be minimized with one click.

Amazon stated that improvements have now been made to the TV sets tested in this regard.

.

Since December 2023, Fire TV devices have had a different menu navigation installed after starting.

Now advertising can only appear automatically on the screen of Amazon televisions if the remote control has not been used for at least three seconds.

It is also possible for users to cancel the advertising immediately using the back button on the remote control.
