In the footsteps of the black pharaohs
“The Lost Kingdom of the Black Pharaohs” at 8:50 p.m., on Arte.
For two millennia, fascinated as they were by ancient Egypt, specialists underestimated the history of Sudan.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the American archaeologist George Reisner carried out extensive excavations in Nubia, a region in the north of the country (and therefore in the south of Egypt).
Along the Nile, he observed numerous pyramids, the remains of collapsed fortresses or simple walls.
Jewels, often covered in desert sand, the oldest of which were erected 2,500 years before Christ.
Blinded by colonialist theories, George Reisner downplayed the extent of the civilization of the “black pharaohs”, whom he saw as the occupants of ephemeral provinces quickly colonized by Egypt…
Now, archaeologists have rehabilitated the kingdom of Kush, which held for 3,000 years and even conquered its illustrious neighbor for a time.
And they are rushing en masse to Sudan to seize its wealth.
In this documentary we discover their work and their research.
And our hearts sink when a bravado American puts on diving equipment to go see the mortuary chambers of a pyramid covered by the waters of the Nile.
“In 2,300 years, there have only been two people who have passed through this tomb before us…” he says, still moved by his adventure.
Arte does not hesitate to film from the sky, with drones, the magnificent pyramids aligned at sunset.
A beautiful tribute to these little-known builders…
