Simona Quadarella won the gold medal in the 800 freestyle at the World Swimming Championships underway in Doha.
After the world championship gold in the 1500 freestyle, the Roman athlete achieved a historic encore for Italian swimming.
The Italian finished her race in a time of 8'17"44, beating the German Isabel Gose (8'17"53), silver, by a whisker.
Third place and bronze medal for New Zealand's Erika Fairweather (8'22"26).

"It was one of the most tiring races I've ever done but I'm really happy. After the gold in the 1500 this is a wonderful world championship. Now I can work calmly for the Olympics and I really have a great incentive."
So Simona Quadarella spoke to Rai Sport after her triumph in the 800 freestyle at the swimming world championships in Doha.
"It's a pride to be the second Italian to have won this medal (51 years after Novella Calligaris, ed.) - continued the Roman -. I thought I wouldn't make it because the others started really strong but also thanks to experience I managed to achieve this great result."
