Italian farmers took a cow to raise awareness about the difficulties of their profession.
As elsewhere in Europe, Italian farmers are angry.
The cow was able to attend Pope Francis' Angelus under the watchful gaze of the faithful gathered in the square.
At the end of his prayer, the Pope greeted the farmers and peasants present in the square, Italian media report.
Last week, this cow, named Ercolina II, had already walked on Vatican Square.
“We brought her here to raise awareness of the problem of this Europe which wants to impose rules on us that are a little too strict.
We also came here to pray, to see if prayer can give us advice on the next steps to take,” explained Cristian, a farmer from Pavia, in the north of the country.
Meanwhile, farmers have sent a letter to the Pope to invoke “his support and blessing”.
