Insect-friendly plants are advertised in hardware stores.

However, some of them are said to be useless for bees.

TikToker @robingaschngelrge is upset about this.

Insects are an important part of the food chain.

Humans also rely on bees as pollinators.

Without them there would be no fruit, vegetables and flowers.

That's why many people want to support nectar and pollen collectors with an insect-friendly garden.

The younger generation in particular is increasingly prioritizing nature conservation and biodiversity.

Many hardware stores and retail chains advertise insect-friendly plants in their range.

TikToker @robingaschngelrge reports in a video about his observations in the hardware store.

According to him, however, many of the plants on display have no use for bees and co.

One shrub that has given him a particularly bad time is forsythia.

Forsythia are among the first shrubs to bloom in early spring.

From mid-March, the ornamental shrubs with their golden yellow flowers are a real eye-catcher.

What many people don't know, however, is that the flowers of the bush produce neither pollen nor nectar and are therefore completely useless for bees.

However, as the TikToker also mentions in his video, there are a few exceptions.

The “Beatrix Farrand” variety is the only forsythia variety that has pollen and is therefore a good plant for bees.

According to @robingaschngelrge, the exceptions confirm the rule: “99.99% of forsythia are absolute garbage!” he concludes.

According to the TikToker, among the supposedly insect-friendly plants there was another one that can hardly be used as bee food: the stuffed snowball.

The popular shrub produces thick, white “snowballs” when it is flowering, but is not necessarily insect-friendly.

The problem: Double flowers look beautiful and attract bees, but they are more of a hindrance to the insects.

They have a large number of petals inside the flower.

These block the way for bees and insects to get pollen.

How do I recognize double flowers?

With unfilled flowers, you can see the stamens inside the flower at first glance.

If only petals are visible, it is a double flower.

  • Plant flowers or shrubs with different bloom times.

This means you have a blooming garden all year round and at the same time provide insects with food all year round.

  • Avoid plants that don't produce pollen or nectar.

These include garden tulips, forsythia, chrysanthemums and geraniums.

  • They rely on native plants such as elderberry, hawthorn or honeysuckle.

Exotic trees offer little food for insects and crowd out the native flora.

  • Create a pile of rocks.

In the end, everyone benefits from an insect-friendly garden.

However, it doesn't always have to be the garden.
