Better long than short: save energy when doing laundry

Highlights: “Eco 40-60” programs have been available for washing machines since 2021. They work at temperatures of around 25 to a maximum of 45 degrees. They are suitable for textiles that can be washed at 40 degrees or more. The most electricity is used to heat the water for washing. Even short washing programs at 40 degree or more are not more economical. They usually require significantly more energy to compensate for the lack of washing time - and more water to achieve good cleaning results.

Eco programs take three and a half hours or longer to complete a wash cycle.

Despite this long running time, they save energy compared to the 60 degree cotton program - with the same cleaning performance.

Some washing machines have a so-called “Eco 40-60” program.

But which laundry can you actually wash with it - and when is it worth it?

Frankfurt/Main - So-called “Eco 40-60” programs have been available for washing machines since 2021, reports the Washing Forum platform.

They therefore work at temperatures of around 25 to a maximum of 45 degrees - and are suitable for textiles that can be washed at 40 degrees or more.

For example for bed linen or towels.

However, if you throw the laundry into the drum, you should allow a little more time.

According to the washing forum, the programs take three and a half hours or longer.

Despite this long running time, they saved energy compared to the 60-degree cotton program - with the same cleaning performance - according to the Washing Forum.

The most electricity is used to heat the water for washing.

Even short washing programs at 40 degrees or more are not more economical.

They usually require significantly more energy to compensate for the lack of washing time - and more water to achieve good cleaning results in a shorter washing time.

Their use should therefore remain the exception, advises the Washing Forum.

Another tip from the experts: load the washing machine as full as possible.

And: At least once a month, select the 60-degree cotton program in the washing machine - with a heavy-duty detergent that contains bleach.

This makes sense for the hygiene inside the washing machine.

With such wash cycles you can also wash hygienically demanding laundry such as kitchen textiles.
