Stress at work can increase the risk of depression.

Researchers found out which factors play a role.

According to the

Federal Ministry of Health,

the causes of depression are complex.

They can include biological, genetic and environmental factors.

For example, poor working conditions and stress factors at work can also increase the risk of developing depression.

In their study published in

The Lancet,

a research team led by epidemiologists Birgit Greiner from the Irish University College Cork and Reiner Rugulies from the National Research Center for the Working Environment in Copenhagen evaluated seven meta-analyses from 2017 to 2021.

These included numerous studies that examined the connection between occupational stress and mental illness in a total of hundreds of thousands of employees.

They all came from high-income countries.

In addition, they showed no symptoms at the start of the study.

In some cases, however, a mental disorder developed over time and was diagnosed clinically.

First, the team of scientists identified 17 unfavorable working conditions from the meta-analyses.

They then calculated the statistical connection with the occurrence of mental disorders.

They identified a total of 13 stress factors that were associated with an increased risk of developing depression.

They discovered the following six factors, among others:

  • mobbing

  • lack of justice

  • Job insecurity

  • great emotional stress

  • lack of support

  • too little recognition

According to the results, bullying has the strongest influence on the risk of depression.

According to industrial psychologist Dieter Zapf from Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, bullying only affects

three

to ten percent of working people.
