Changing tires is considered a vexing issue for many drivers.

A new regulation will soon have to be observed, otherwise there will be fines.

Kassel – The world of car tires is a complex topic that causes headaches for many drivers.

In particular, changing tires from summer to winter tires and vice versa can be an annoying task.

All-season tires, also known as all-weather tires, are an alternative that eliminates the need to constantly change tires.

But the tire landscape is changing, because a new norm will soon apply: a certain type of tire has been banned, which brings new challenges for drivers.

The ban on M+S tires applies from October January 2024

From October 2024, only winter and all-season tires with the Alpine symbol may be used in winter road conditions.

The pictogram shows a mountain and a snowflake and signals the winter suitability of the tire.

However, tires with the M+S marking (for mud and snow) are prohibited.

Although such tires have not been sold for a long time, they could still be mounted on many rims.

Drivers should take a close look at their winter tires from 2024 - there is a risk of a severe fine.

Penalties for drivers for non-compliance with the new rule

If tires with only M+S markings continue to be used, there will be penalties.

According to the catalog of fines, the penalty is 60 euros and one point in Flensburg if you drive with unsuitable tires in winter.

In the event of an accident with the wrong tires, the costs can be significantly higher.

Situational winter tire requirement in Germany

In Germany there is no general winter tire requirement, but rather a situational requirement (§ 2 (3a) StVO).

This means that in winter road conditions, i.e. black ice, slippery snow, slush, ice or frost, you can only drive with winter tires, informs the ADAC.

The situational winter tire requirement is considered fulfilled if winter tires are installed on all four wheels.

A rule of thumb is the “O to O” rule (October to Easter), but this has no legal status.

Identification of winter tires and exceptions to the winter tire requirement

Winter tires can be identified by the Alpine symbol or the M+S marking.

Until September 30, 2024, tires with the M+S marking are considered suitable for winter if they were manufactured by December 31, 2017.

Winter tires are not required for all vehicles.

Single-track motor vehicles (e.g. motorcycles), agricultural and forestry commercial vehicles and motorized hospital elevators are excluded.

It is important that all drivers are aware of the new tire rules and adjust their tires accordingly.

Failure to comply not only results in fines and points in Flensburg, but also increases the risk of accidents.

The 2024 tire regulations set new standards for safety on our roads and ensure that all vehicles are suitable for winter conditions.
