The numerous days of rain and the flows of the streams threw a huge amount of waste onto the beaches in the country, but one item was special to all of them: a blue fishing boat that washed up on the beach of Beit Yanai, and according to the assessment it is a non-local boat.
The inspectors of the Nature and Parks Authority in the marine unit rescued the boat out of the water.
The accumulation of waste in the sea and on the beaches is a global problem, and harms the beaches of the entire world.
Plastic waste in the sea, such as strings, ropes, sacks and bags is the second largest cause of damage to the sea turtles off the coast of Israel.
According to various estimates, about 8 million tons of waste reach the seas and oceans every year.
This figure is equivalent to emptying an entire garbage truck into the sea every minute!
Most of the waste (between 60-90%) found in the days and on the beaches is plastic, which is almost non-biodegradable.

15 trillion microplastic particles floating in the oceans
There are currently over 5 trillion different plastic parts floating in all the oceans, and another 15 trillion micro-plastic particles (plastic particles less than 5 mm in size)
. In many cases, waste washed up from other beaches and swept away by sea currents, sometimes for long distances.
Almost 20% of the turtles taken in at the rescue center arrive as a result of injuries originating from the plastic waste in the sea. The main injuries are due to entanglement in the waste itself. Turtles found entangled in plastic waste suffer injuries to their limbs and neck, when the wires become entangled around them and block the blood flow. When the blood flow to a limb is disturbed, the process of tissue death begins, which without treatment will progress to full necrosis until the rotting limb falls off. When the muscle begins to break down and die, toxins accumulate in the damaged limb, products of muscle breakdown. Also, the rotting tissue constitutes soil fertile for growing bacteria.

The Nature and Parks Authority is promoting a cleanup operation on Friday (2/23/24) at Beit Yanai beach.
The public is invited to take part in the important activity.
