Through open source research, the independent Russian media Mediazona, together with BBC Russia, confirmed the names of 44,654 Russian soldiers killed since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The investigation was relaunched by the Kyiv Independent.

Since Mediazona's last update at the beginning of February, the names of 1,194 soldiers have been added to the list of Russian soldiers who died in Ukraine.

The report specifies that the real figures are considerably higher as the information verified so far comes from public sources, including obituaries, messages from relatives, regional media reports and reports from local authorities.


    In the last two weeks, 15 military personnel with ranks of colonel and above have been added to the list.

Since Russia began the war, over 3,100 officers, including 379 with the rank of lieutenant colonel or higher, have been killed in combat in Ukraine.

Nearly 5,354 casualties were counted among newly recruited Russian soldiers.

To date, General Oleg Tsokov, deputy commander of the Southern Military District, is the highest-ranking Russian military officer to have been killed.


    Most of the soldiers who died in battle were from Rostov, Sverdlovsk, Bashkiria, Chelyabinsk and the republic of Buryatia.


    Total casualty estimates vary greatly depending on the source: senior US defense officials estimate that around 315,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded so far.

As of February 18, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces states that Russia has lost 402,430 soldiers.
