Claudia Sheinbaum yesterday officially registered as a candidate for the presidency of Mexico for Morena, the centre-left party in the government: this was reported by the National Electoral Institute (INE).
"We have received the request to register Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo as a candidate for the presidency of the Republic", declared the president of INE, Guadalupe Taddei, in a ceremony attended by Sheinbaum herself, probable future replacement of the current president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador .
Former mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum is in fact widely leading in the polls ahead of the June 2 elections.
Curiously, the formalization of her candidacy took place on the same day in which the opposition had called a protest against the government.
