Who even thought to check?

Tiktok surfers were left horrified when they discovered that breadcrumbs sold at any average supermarket are not made only of bread as they were sure (and as their name promises).

Moreover, on each bag of breadcrumbs you will find a different list of ingredients.

Crumb lovers who use them for many popular home dishes, from schnitzels and onion rings to fish, were surprised to find out that some of them are made from different flours, mixed grains, soy, vegetable oils and even fish extract.

TikTok user Tara Louise, who has amassed a following of around 30,000 on the platform, where she regularly shares "simple solutions to the cost of living", shared a video earlier this month with the surprising discovery.

"I'm in Coles supermarket and I need to buy breadcrumbs. I thought they'd all be the same - I just take the cheapest if I don't have it at home," said Tara, adding that she usually prefers to make the breadcrumbs herself, "I went to get the cheapest option and thought I'd have a quick look on the ingredients and look at the differences. This is the Coles brand breadcrumbs for example. They cost $1.70 a bag, but look at all the ingredients in here. I'm not saying it's good or bad. It just seems like there are a lot of ingredients for what is apparently just breadcrumbs." .

@taralouisesmartsavings Who knew there was such a difference between bread crumbs.

I thought it would just be the ingredients of bread but guess again I was wrong Im not saying what is better or worse but its interesting to see the difference so when were deciding what to buy we can make an educated decision on whats best foe our family and our budget.

The next cheaper alternative, also a Coles brand, was "a bit less daunting", Tara said, with just four ingredients: flour (wheat), salt, sugar and yeast.

Why the difference?

The TikTok user explained in response: "It depends on where the breadcrumbs are made. You can use a variety of breads for one mixture and all the ingredients used to create them must be specified. One bakery I worked at had to do the same for the breadcrumbs made in the store."

Another user who identified himself as a Coles employee explained that the cheapest option "is made from various leftover breads in the bakery, so they list all the ingredients of all the breads. The expensive option is a simple dough intended for breadcrumbs."

And what is happening in Israel?

Other Golanshis expressed their surprise at the number of ingredients in a food item intended to be so simple.

People admitted that the thought of checking what was in the breadcrumbs never even crossed their minds.

"Wow, I buy the cheap ones because I like their taste. I never thought to check what's really in there," one viewer wrote and another added: "I check a lot of labels for ingredients but I wouldn't even think to check breadcrumbs. I assumed they were all the same the thing".

"I have to admit I never thought to look at the ingredients of breadcrumbs! I can't get over that amount of ingredients!"

Another viewer wrote and another wrote: "I am shocked. The fish killed me. If I had an allergy to seafood, there is no way I would check if there is fish in breadcrumbs."

Many are now urging people to check the ingredients of the breadcrumbs they buy before using them for frying - just to beware of any unexpected allergic reactions.
