The prosecution gave its consent to the plea agreement of 3 years and 11 months for Wolfgang Rieke, the 63-year-old German truck driver who hit and killed the cycling champion Davide Rebellin on 30 November 2022.
The request was made this morning by the man's lawyers before the Vicenza court, after the agreement on the sentence had been rejected at the preliminary hearing.
The defense also requested the conversion of the sentence from detention to house arrest.
The college will decide on March 11th.
During today's hearing, Rieke read some spontaneous statements: "It was a mistake - he said in front of the judges - and a tragedy. I am very, very, very sorry. I regret it, I will accept my sentence".
The possible decision on easing the precautionary measure - Rieke is currently detained in prison in Vicenza - could be taken before the next hearing.
The Rebellin family had been compensated via insurance with 825 thousand euros.
