"We are witnessing in recent days the intensification of a Russian disinformation strategy which sees Putin himself at the forefront with the aim of disorientating our public opinions through the spread of a fallacious narrative whose cornerstones are mainly three: the image of a Russia longing for peace, the picture of a war that is now useless and whose outcome in favor of Moscow is no longer in question and the perception of a West now tired of supporting a conflict of friction that is expensive and has no hope of success".
This was said by the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, in his speech at the conference entitled 'The strategic implications of the war in Ukraine for Italy'.
"Moscow's objective - he added - is to take advantage of the upcoming electoral consultations which will also involve other Western Atlantic countries. However, the reality of the facts is very different. Russia finds itself engaged in a long-lasting conflict of friction, suffering huge losses of men and means.
No primary objective of Moscow can be said to have been achieved. The economy's support for war support will not be sustainable for long in light of increasingly stringent sanctions and a financial commitment for national defense which has risen to around 6.2% of GDP, which is equal to a third of all public spending.
NATO is the real shield we have to defend freedom and democracy".
