For many young people, looking for a job becomes like running the gauntlet.

This is also the case for a 26-year-old TikToker who tearfully complains to her followers about her suffering.

New York – Lazy, out of touch with life, unwilling to work – these are just a few of the adjectives that older people in particular like to use to describe members of Generation Z (i.e. all those who were born between 1997 and 2010).

While influencers who tear up about a 40-hour week are likely to harden this cliché, a woman on TikTok has now proven that this assumption is actually a generalization.

Nightmare job search: Young woman bursts into tears in video

The video that 26-year-old New Yorker Lohanny posted on the platform in January 2024 has already reached 25 million people (as of February 20) and it has obviously touched a nerve.

Lohanny herself belongs to Generation Z and, according to her, is currently looking for a job in her native New York.

Not so easy, as it turns out, because the job market is highly competitive.

And so Lohanny resorts to desperate measures.

Armed with printed out applications, she goes from door to door in the video to express her interest to potential employers.

She admits to the digital edition of the US broadcaster FOX News that she doesn't necessarily feel good about it: "I've never felt so humble in my life."

But why does the 26-year-old take such drastic steps?

For her, this is just the “old-fashioned” method in which she now puts her hopes.

She doesn't know whether it will be successful, but many of her friends use the same tactic.

She has clearly had enough of conventional applications.

She always felt humiliated.

Even though she has two university degrees and speaks three languages, she was repeatedly only offered the minimum wage - not very motivating.

“It’s a little embarrassing,” the TikToker admits through tears in the video.

But because she still really wants to work, she's now trying it straight away and continuing her job search on foot and in person.

There is a lot of praise and encouragement under the video.

“That’s very brave, walking around with your resume.

You will find a job!” supports one user.

“I feel for you, you don’t have to be embarrassed,” affirms another.

When they see the young woman, others remember the past and muse: “That's exactly how people looked for jobs before the Internet.” Many users also give career tips.

Among them: flight attendant, translator, teacher, journalist.
