Put your feet up in retirement?

More and more older people are working longer.
But is a low pension actually the reason for this?
More and more older people in Germany are still employed.
This is shown by current statistics from the
Federal Statistical Office (Destatis)
.
According to this, labor participation among 60 to 64 year olds increased more than in any other age group.
It rose from 47% in 2012 to 63% in 2022. There was also an increase beyond the retirement age.
In 2012, 11% of 65 to 69 year olds were still employed.
In 2022 the proportion was 19%.
But what are the reasons for the increasing number of older workers?

The Federal Statistical Office
sees one reason for this
in the change in the legal framework for retirement.
Since 2012, the statutory retirement age in Germany has been gradually raised to 67 years.
An increase in the employment of older people is therefore to be expected in the future.
An increased level of education could also be a reason for the increase.
The Federal Office says: “Higher educational qualifications are often associated with longer participation in working life.” In 2022, highly qualified people will be involved in working life significantly more often than low-skilled people.
Who is considered highly or poorly qualified is not explained in more detail.

The
Federal Statistical Office
also reports that for around 40% of employed people aged 65 and over, the activity carried out is the main source of livelihood.
In 2022, there will be 593,000 people in Germany who will be living primarily on their own income at retirement age.
The majority of employed people aged 65 and over live primarily from their pension or their assets.
“Working at retirement age could mean, on the one hand, being able to actively participate in social life for longer and, on the other hand, counteracting the threat of poverty in old age,” says the Federal Office.
Continuing to work despite retirement age: What options are available
For many older people, it is not just financial reasons that play a role in their decision to continue working.
Social reasons can also be a reason for continued employment.
People who still feel healthy and productive at retirement age may still want to participate in professional and public life.

around half of all jobs in which pensioners work today are mini-jobs.
This includes:
Cleaning or cleaning assistance
Caretaker activity
Office help
Letter delivery
Driver activities
The most important thing is to think about how capable you still are.
In most cases, heavy physical activities will no longer be possible.

further explains that many people of retirement age would probably prefer to take on tasks where they could use the qualifications they have learned.
That is also possible.
Trained specialists would be more in demand than ever.
Many would therefore agree with their employer to continue the employment relationship.
The German Pension Insurance
says: “Anyone who has reached regular retirement age does not automatically have to retire.
Only those who submit an application will receive a pension.
Anyone who postpones the start of their pension and continues to have a job subject to compulsory insurance will receive a surcharge of 0.5 percent on their pension for each month of the later start of their pension.” A later retirement is therefore particularly worthwhile financially.

The experience of older people is also in demand in the training of new specialists.
Educational institutions such as chambers of industry and commerce as well as private educational institutions, vocational schools and similar institutions would offer interesting opportunities for older people.
