Dishes are often soaked after eating before being put in the dishwasher.
This can lead to damage to your health.
Let's be honest: After cooking and eating, we all want to treat ourselves to a few minutes of rest.
This is also why dirty dishes are often first placed in the sink filled with water so that they can soak.
However, you should not leave pans, plates and cutlery in standing water for too long - there is a risk of bacteria.

Because the plates with leftover food paired with the warm washing up water are the ideal environment for bacteria to multiply in no time.
The bacteria can then spread from the sink throughout the entire apartment.
This naturally increases the risk of developing it.
Plates with leftover food after you have eaten meat, fish or seafood are particularly dangerous, explains

The soaking period is crucial
In principle, letting the dishes soak for a few minutes is not harmful.
However, you should never leave it in a sink filled with water for a longer period of time or overnight.
“I wouldn’t extend the exposure to an hour or more, as the bacteria that are still present can then use the leftover food and multiply,” explains Dr.

The dishes are often soaked to relieve the strain on the dishwasher, which often emits unpleasant odors - but this could turn out to be a problem.
Nowadays, most dishwashers have a dirt sensor that scans the dirty dishes and, depending on the degree of soiling, determines how much water and with what water pressure the dishes are treated.
If the dishwasher now considers the pre-cleaned dishes to be clean, it washes them with less cleaning power.
Fitforfun
explains the resulting problems: “This means that less obvious dirt, such as grease films, is removed less reliably.”

Another point that speaks against soaking dishes: Due to the increased water consumption, you are putting additional strain on the environment.
If you have a dishwasher, you should generally not wash dishes by hand, but rather use the device.
