Urgent recall: Questionable additives in the affected chips can harm children's health, warns the Federal Office of Consumer Protection.

Munich – The wave of recalls of snack items continues.

While there were initially trendy chips that posed a health risk and, at first glance, harmless flips that could cause allergic reactions, the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety is now warning of another type of chip that poses health risks.

Health hazard for children: Warning about sharp chips

Consumers should be careful: The authorities of the federal states and the BVL warn against consuming the “Takis Fuego Tortilla Chips” from the company KKB Sweet & More from Schwarzenbek.

The snack can have a particularly negative impact on the health of children.

According to information from the official portalfoodwarning.de on Thursday (February 15), the affected snack items contain the azo dyes E 110 and E 129.

Federal Office of Consumer Protection warns: Consuming tortilla chips “can affect children”

Azo dyes are used to color food.

E 110 provides yellow-orange coloring, E 129 provides red coloring.

Both dyes are permitted as additives in foods.

However, the important warning for azo dyes is missing from the chips: “May impair activity and attention in children.” In addition, allergens are not highlighted in the list of ingredients and the labeling is only in English, which brought the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety into action.

Attention, chips recall – products are labeled “Made in Mexico”

All batches that were manufactured in Mexico and also bear the “Made in Mexico” imprint are affected.

Anyone who has bought the pack of “Takis Fuego Tortilla Chips”, which are available online and in individual Rewe and Edeka branches, should not pass them on to children.

Consumption is not recommended.

Azo dyes are suspected of being carcinogenic - and can cause pseudo-allergic symptoms on the skin and respiratory tract.

Recall of trend chips: questionable dye can be dangerous

They are also considered questionable for people with illnesses such as asthma or neurodermatitis.

That's why adults who are sensitive to these dyes should not consume tortilla chips.

It is recommended that the chips be returned to the points of sale.

Again and again, supposedly harmless snacking fun comes into the focus of consumer advocates.

Authorities recently warned urgently about the “Hot Chip Challenge”.
