On February 23, 2022, Lydia offers a young girl, who is traveling in the direction of western Ukraine, to take advantage of her car since she is going in the same direction.
During the night, close to their destination, the two women witness in the distance the first Russian bombings on their country.
War is declared.
Lydia, a psychologist, will then decide to use her vehicle to help different people move around in the middle of a conflict.
Each episode of the Ukrainian series “In Her Car” follows one of these journeys, with different passengers each time.
The Ukrainian Eugen Tunik co-wrote and directed the ten parts, the first five of which are put online this Wednesday, February 21 on France.tv.
From his home near kyiv, he tells us about the genesis of this project.
“On February 24, 2022, I was in the same place as I am now.
Like all Ukrainians, I heard the first bombs, I woke up around 5 a.m. trying to understand what was happening.
After a few days, I moved with my family to the west of the country to be safer, and we stayed there for almost a year.
There, I taught children and drove people here and there.
That's where I got the idea for the series.
I responded to the Berlin festival's call for projects, and it was selected among the five best.
From there, I knew it was going to be possible to make it happen.
