There will be a change for many people in the future when it comes to ID cards and passports.
This is due to be introduced from May 1st.
Bremen – In Germany, ID is required; every citizen aged 16 and over must carry an appropriate document (identity card or passport).
However, if the ID card has expired, there are penalties.
Now there is a change to ID cards and passports that should make traveling abroad easier and avoid delays.
Changes to passports and ID cards are intended to make traveling more uncomplicated – doctoral degrees affected
In the future, a doctorate should no longer appear before the last name on the two identification documents.
This was announced by the spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
The change is intended to avoid difficulties in international travel.
The problem: the letters Dr.
were sometimes mistaken for the first letters of the last name abroad - and thus caused delays in border controls.

The Parliamentary Managing Director of the Greens, Irene Mihalic, also confirmed the innovation to the
Rheinische Post
.
“The coalition has agreed on a procedure that eliminates misunderstandings when reading identification documents abroad,” said the politician, who herself holds a doctorate.
A regulation from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which is available to the daily newspaper, specified the reasons.
It states that the doctoral title in front of the family name will be deleted because this is “contrary to international customs”.
Doctoral title should have a separate data field: Changes to passport and ID as of May 1, 2024
Anyone who has a doctorate doesn't need to worry: the doctorate will still appear on your ID card or passport, just in a different place.
In the future there will be a new, separate data field where a doctoral degree can be entered.
The change applies to all identification documents renewed from May 1, 2024.
“Changes to the application process are not necessary at the citizens’ offices,” explained the spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
The Federal Council's Internal Affairs Committee is scheduled to consider the change on March 3rd.
