Tres Leches cake is a treat for all the senses.

The name says it all, because three dairy products make the South American classic wonderfully juicy. 

The popular Tres Leches cake is based on the tried and tested motto “All good things come in threes” and the list of ingredients.

The popular cake has been baked under the South American sun for generations, and here too it is gathering more and more fans around the tray.

The pastry owes its name to three different types of milk that were previously used in the classic preparation.

Cow, sheep and goat milk are found in the traditional recipe, but there are now some variations with milk, condensed milk and whipped cream.

As with classic sponge cake rolls, an airy sponge cake base from a tray is used as the base, which after baking is soaked in a kind of milk sauce and served with loosely whipped cream.

In the Balkan states of Albania and Montenegro, the cake known as trileçe is decorated last with a layer of caramel sauce.

For the Tres Leches cake from the tray you need the following ingredients:

  • 6 eggs

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 1 pack vanilla sugar

  • 250g powdered sugar

  • 135 ml neutral oil, e.g.

    B. sunflower oil

  • 165 ml mineral water

  • 400g flour

  • 2.5 tsp baking powder

  • 150 ml milk

  • 125 ml condensed milk

  • 150 ml whipped cream

  • 250 ml caramel sauce

In South America the tres leches cake is a delicious eye-catcher, in the Balkans it is celebrated as trileçe cake.

Step by step to the perfect Tres Leches cake:

  • Preheat the oven to 170 °C top/bottom heat and line a deep baking tray with baking paper.

  • For the sponge cake, beat the eggs until foamy.

    Gradually add salt, vanilla sugar and powdered sugar and continue beating the mixture.

  • Stir the oil and mineral water into the dough in a thin stream.

    Mix the flour and baking powder and fold into the cake batter.

  • Spread the sponge cake evenly on the tray and bake in the preheated oven for about 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.

    Remove from the oven and let cool for ten minutes. 

  • Mix milk, condensed milk and liquid whipped cream.

    Poke holes in the sponge cake with a fork and gradually pour the milk and cream mixture over them.

  • When the sponge cake has absorbed the mixture, add a layer of caramel sauce on top and refrigerate if necessary.

    Cut into pieces and enjoy while longing for summer, sun and beach.

    If you want to get creative, you can decorate the tres leches or trileçe cake with a fine pattern.

    To do this, briefly whip 50 milliliters of cream until semi-stiff using a hand mixer and fill it into a fresh-keeping bag or a piping bag with a small nozzle.

    Carefully cut a very small corner from the bag or use a piping bag and pipe cream in thin strips onto the cake.

    Run a toothpick through the strips to create a pattern.

    The caramel sauce can also be made yourself with just two ingredients.

    Easy Tasty Tip:

    Following the South American example, the caramel sauce can also be replaced with a thin layer of semi-stiff whipped cream, which is spread loosely over the sponge cake.

    Thanks to the rich mixture of milk, condensed milk and cream, the Tres Leches cake isn't dry in the slightest and you'll really rave about it with every bite.
