Delays in package delivery may soon be a thing of the past.
The solution: parcel drones, which are now being used in Germany.
Lüdenscheid – Deliveries often fail because the delivery person rings the bell when no one is at home.
But high traffic volumes on the roads can also contribute to significant delays.
If packages absolutely need to arrive on time, for example for birthdays or Christmas, they must be sent out early enough.
But there is hope for improvement: the first parcel drones are now being used in Germany.
Initially, selected companies will be supplied by the drones
It is not uncommon for packages to go through a real journey before they finally reach the recipient.
Waiting for delivery has brought some parcel service customers to the brink of despair.
This is now set to change in Lüdenscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia.
From Wednesday (February 21st), a fully automated drone fleet will deliver parcels.
For the time being, however, they will not deliver any packages to private individuals, but only to selected companies around the A 45 in the region.
Because the route is heavily used because of the Rahmede Bridge there.
The bridge had long been considered at risk of collapsing and was therefore closed; new construction has been underway since 2023.
The result of this closure is massive daily traffic jams, which lead to significant delivery delays.
According to project partners, parcel delivery via drones should bring advantages for companies
The drone project, which flies packages on a set route to their destination and drops them off there, is called Last Mile Delivery.
The Bielefeld drone company Third Element Aviation and the Koerschulte Group from Lüdenscheid are the project partners.
They believe that this type of parcel delivery offers significant benefits for companies suffering from traffic problems.
With the help of drones, they could receive urgently needed goods quickly and without detours.
In addition, this form of parcel delivery is environmentally friendly.
Delivering parcels with drones should not only be able to avoid traffic jams, but also be environmentally friendly.

For the first time, the Federal Aviation Office has granted approval for a commercial scheduled flight connection of this type at the federal level for the project.
A test operation previously took place in the city.
Experts recognize great potential for numerous areas of application in Germany.
It cannot be ruled out that in the future even private individuals could receive their deliveries from the air.
