Two sick and elderly prisoners died in Rome in the space of a few hours.
The first, who died in the night between the 19th and 20th, was 66 years old, diabetic and was in a cell in Rebibbia.
The second, who died yesterday morning, was 77 years old and was suffering from pneumonia, as well as having kidney failure: he was hospitalized from Rebibbia.
The Guarantor of persons deprived of liberty in Lazio, Stefano Anastasia, who has undertaken to hold a meeting with the managers of the Local Health Authority to verify the state of the health services within the institute, denounced "the incompatibility of detention with serious illnesses, which cannot be adequately treated in prison."
Regarding the death of the 66-year-old, Anastasia added: "the prosecutor's investigation will tell about the timeliness of the rescue and the assistance provided".
