In Triggiano, in the province of Bari, a new strain of Xylella has been identified, renamed 'Xylella fastidiosa fastidiosa': this was confirmed to ANSA by the regional councilor for Agriculture, Donato Pentassuglia.

The variant was found on six almond trees and laboratory analyzes already carried out confirmed the diagnosis yesterday.

Today the Agriculture Department will sign an order to fell the infected trees and new tests will be carried out on the plants within 800 metres.

“This discovery – comments Pentassuglia – highlights the great work we are doing in Puglia, leaving nothing to chance but continuing with constant monitoring.

We carry out checks and sampling in over one hundred sites, and this discovery is the result of this challenging but effective work."

The Region, in fact, carries out investigations on vectors and therefore on insects, and it was during this sampling activity that the new variant of Xylella was identified.

“We must not create alarmism – continues Pentassuglia – but neither should we lower our guard, on the contrary.

We do not yet know whether the variant is more or less aggressive, whether it is virulent, investigations will establish this.

But what we must do is use maximum caution because the vector can potentially also affect vine plants."
