The former leader of the 5 Star Movement Luigi Di Maio received a notice of end of investigation for defamation, investigation closed by the Reggio Emilia Prosecutor's Office following the complaint presented by the mayor of Bibbiano Andrea Carletti.
In addition to Di Maio, there are 47 others under investigation in the same vein arising from the complaint of the mayor, who ended up under house arrest in June 2019, then released and is currently on trial for abuse of office in the 'Angels and Demons' hearing on alleged illicit foster care in the Val d'Enza area of Reggio Emilia.
In September 2019, Carletti filed a complaint reporting 147 posts and emails with content deemed offensive or threatening towards him.
Among those reported was Di Maio, who in mid-July, before the government crisis and the Coidem pact, wrote among other things: "I don't want to have anything to do with the Democratic Party. With the party that is part of the Bibbiano scandal, I don't want to have anything to do with children taken away from their parents and even subjected to electroshock and sent to other families, with the PD mayor being involved in this."
