Streaming from major providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney+ is becoming increasingly expensive.

With a few tricks you can still get away cheaper.

Munich – Streaming provider Netflix has no longer allowed users to use a shared account since 2023.

In case of doubt, you may be blocked from password sharing.

The approach has already worked at Netflix.

The company recorded 13 million new subscribers in the last three months of 2023 - a total of 100 million households previously streamed via friends and family, and now Disney+ is planning to do something similar.

Many consumers are now looking for legal alternatives.

An expert has advice on how you can still save money.

Stream via subscription and still save money legally – here’s how it works

Frederick Lüders, founder of the account sharing platform Partizi, tells

IPPEN.MEDIA

his tips for getting the most out of accounts with Netflix, Spotify & Co. - legal , smart and budget-friendly.

1. Subscription optimization for streaming services

“Regularly check which services you really use and cancel the ones you don’t need,” explains Lüders.

Many providers also allow you to temporarily pause your subscription and save a lot of money.

It may make sense not to subscribe to all services at the same time, but to switch different providers on a monthly basis.

2. Collective subscriptions to Disney or Netflix

Some services offer so-called “shared” subscriptions, for example for families or groups of (friends).

This is usually cheaper than financing a subscription on your own, as the costs can be redistributed among everyone involved.

Disney+ or Netflix, for example, allow you to create multiple sub-accounts where everyone can log into their own.

3. Sharing is caring: Share Netflix, Disney and Spotify legally

Accounts on Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify can be legally shared via sharing platforms and thus save costs.

“If you don’t have your own subscription, you can simply join another account there,” says Lüders.

4. Trial periods, social discounts and long-term commitment for streaming providers

Lüders also recommends using trial periods: “Some streaming services offer free trial periods.

Use this to test the service before deciding on a subscription.

However, probationary periods are becoming increasingly rare and shorter.

But there are always special offers, for example on

.

On the other hand, there are sometimes discounts when booking long-term subscriptions.” Discounts for certain people can also come into play here.

For example, Spotify and Amazon Prime offer affordable plans for students.

5. Variety between different streaming subscriptions

It would also be worth changing between different subscriptions.

“Especially with subscriptions that have little and specific content, such as Paramount+ and Disney+, it is worthwhile to only book individual months,” says Lüders.

If you want to benefit from the annual discounts despite a short period of use, you can also book a shared subscription for one to two months via sharing platforms.

6. Instead of sharing an account: take out cheaper advertising subscriptions

Netflix, Disney+ and, more recently, Amazon Prime have special advertising subscriptions that are cheaper.

The disadvantage: advertising clips are played during streaming.

Advertising also appears before the selected series or film starts.

Thinking about appropriate austerity measures could now become even more relevant.

Because Netflix has already announced that it will increase subscription prices again in 2024.

According to the latest figures from Netflix, the American series boom actually seems to be decreasing.

In the course of 2023, 481 scripted series were published in the USA, according to a study by the media analysis company Ampere.

In 2022 there were 633 US series.
