If the right to repair is introduced, the manufacturers of many products will be held responsible.
TÜV Rheinland now offers tests for their goods.
Frankfurt – Throw away less, repair more: With the right to repair and another eco-design regulation, the EU is taking action against the current throwaway culture.
A measure is intended to make repairs easy and, above all, to make the manufacturers responsible.
They can already have their products tested for the new repair standards by TÜV Rheinland.
TÜV certifies products from manufacturers for the possibility of repair
Manufacturers also have the opportunity to have the repairability of their products certified, as TÜV Rheinland announced.
A repair index is created through analyzes in the TÜV laboratories.
Once a manufacturer has their product tested, consumers can obtain information about it through the Certipedia database.

The EU Parliament and member states agreed on a right to repair at the beginning of February, but this has yet to be adopted.
If the law comes into force in its current form, the rights of consumers in particular will be strengthened.
The EU's decision to locate its anti-money laundering authority in Frankfurt also caused a stir.
The warranty obligation would then be extended for another year after a repair, meaning that consumers have longer warranty claims.
The repair within the scope of the warranty obligation would also be free of charge.
Even after the warranty period has expired, repairing industrial products should become cheaper and easier.
TÜV test for right to repair - spare parts must be kept available
In addition, spare parts would then have to be affordable and available from manufacturers in the long term.
In addition, manufacturers would then be obliged to provide information about the repair and the expected costs.

This right to repair is intended, among other things, to help reduce the growing mountain of electronic waste in the European Union.
According to Eurostat, the amount of electronic waste increased from almost 3 million tons in 2012 to 4.9 million tons in 2021.
This corresponds to an average of 11 kilograms of electronic waste per inhabitant per year.
Smaller repair cafés can also make a contribution.
More sustainable product design through eco-design
The Ecodesign Regulation is intended to address the problem of environmentally harmful product design by setting specific requirements for different product groups.
This directive has been in force since 2005 and already applies to 29 product groups such as televisions, dishwashers and vacuum cleaners.
According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), these requirements can be continuously expanded.
