Several dozen Muslim worshipers were killed on Sunday in a "serious attack" on a mosque in Natiaboani, eastern Burkina Faso, on the same day as another deadly attack on Catholics gathered in a church, the UN has learned. AFP from security and local sources.
“Armed people attacked a mosque in Natiaboani at around 5am (local time) on Sunday, killing several dozen people,” a security source said.
“The victims were all Muslims, mostly men who had gathered in the mosque to pray,” said a local resident.
Another local source explained that "the terrorists entered the city in the early hours of the morning. They surrounded the mosque and shot at the faithful who were there for the first prayer of the day, many of whom were killed, including a important religious leader".
"Even elements of the military detachment and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP, civilian auxiliaries of the army) were targeted by these groups," the same source said.
