Despite years of driving experience, there are signs that drivers are not necessarily familiar with - including the example with the "OD" inscription.
Munich – There are numerous traffic signs in traffic, but not all of them can be easily interpreted.
One of these signs bears the inscription “OD” and can be found in a wide variety of designs and variants – for example in white or yellow, square or cuboid.
It often stands completely inconspicuous in the form of a thick stone on the side of the road.
What does the OD traffic sign mean for drivers?
The stones in which the inscription is carved are usually only half a meter high and therefore relatively small.
So it's no wonder when drivers overlook the OD traffic sign on the road.
In fact, “OD” is the abbreviation for “local transit”.
According to the definition of the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport, a local thoroughfare is “the part of a federal road that lies within the urban area and also serves to develop the adjacent properties or to provide multiple connections to the local road network.” This includes motorways or motorways that run through an urban area so not to that.
The OD sign is available in different versions - including a yellow curb.

Accordingly, the OD traffic signs or stones can usually be seen near a town sign.
Since they belong to the group of station signs and therefore primarily have a road legal significance, they are not relevant for drivers.
In some federal states the sign not only has the abbreviation “OD”, but is also supplemented by a “V” and “E”.
These letters stand for the connection area or access area that lies within a location.

OD traffic sign: From repairs to renovation
But why is the street marked as a through town at all?
The reason for this is that the federal government, rather than the municipalities, assumes the burden of road construction and thus the costs of repairs and renovations.
However, there are some rules and exceptions that have been summarized by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, including:
The municipalities are always responsible for the construction of sidewalks and parking spaces in town thoroughfares.
The municipalities are responsible for the road construction burden for all parts of the town thoroughfares if they have more than 80,000 inhabitants.
If the population limit of 80,000 is exceeded in the census, the road construction burden, if it was previously the responsibility of the federal government, will be transferred to the municipality at the beginning of the third financial year.
The federal government bears the costs of identifying the OD traffic signs or stones.
If the boundaries of local thoroughfares shift, for example due to the development of residential areas, the legal situation changes.
Often there are traffic signs that you thought you knew what they meant.
At the latest when the fine notice is in the mailbox, it turns out that the previous assumption was wrong.
One of these signs is the well-known red triangle with the black snowflake in the middle, which is not only important to pay attention to in winter.
