"We have talked a lot about migration: we have the duty and the possibility as a Union to take on the task of transforming a disorderly and tumultuous phenomenon, now in the hands of traffickers, into an orderly and legal arrival. It is extremely urgent to define a new immigration pact and asylum and make agreements with the countries of origin and transit".
President Sergio Mattarella
said this
during his state visit to Cyprus today and tomorrow.
"The government has launched the Mattei plan to collaborate with the countries of the African continent in a way that involves the entire European Union", stated the head of state, speaking of migratory flows.
Speaking about international tensions, Mattarella said that "Cyprus and Italy are two Mediterranean countries that not only have stability and peace at heart but also international collaboration, freedom of trade and therefore freedom of navigation. What happens in the Red Sea is a further effect of that conflict which puts at risk a fundamental principle of the international community such as freedom of navigation, with the risk that this could be imitated elsewhere in the world".
