Where do Germans prefer to eat?
An evaluation by the language platform Preply shows which national cuisines are particularly popular.
Asian, African – or maybe the Italian around the corner.
Especially in big cities, the choice of restaurants is almost unlimited.
A new study by the language platform
Preply
shows which national cuisines Germans like best.
The list was compiled using Tripadvisor reviews.
In total
, Preply
analyzed more than 48,000 restaurants in 43 countries.
Lebanese national cuisine in first place
Only restaurants that guests gave four or more stars were rated highly.
Only restaurants that were already classified according to their respective cuisines were included in the selection of the most popular national cuisines.
The results clearly show that Middle Eastern dishes are very popular with Germans.
Not only does Lebanese cuisine make it to first place with 95 percent positive reviews - Middle Eastern cuisine makes it into the top ten several times.
Dishes like falafel, hummus and tabbouleh seem to be the undisputed favorites of Germans.

Vietnamese cuisine comes in second place (94.1 percent positive ratings), making it the only Southeast Asian country to occupy one of the top ten places.
No wonder, as Vietnam's cuisine is considered particularly diverse.
It is cooked with lots of vegetables, fresh herbs and meat or tofu.
Almost every menu includes summer rolls, the traditional noodle soup (“Pho”) and various bowls with rice, noodles, salad and spicy sauces.
German cuisine is not particularly popular
The third place is not Italian, but Sicilian cuisine.
Restaurants in this category were rated 93.9 percent positively.
In addition to pizza, pasta and pesto, the Italian island is also known for some street foods, for example arancini (fried rice balls) or the sweet cannoli (crispy dough rolls with a creamy filling).
Also popular regional cuisines are:
African (91.9 percent)
Afghan (91.7 percent)
Israeli (91.2 percent)
Irish (89.3 percent)
Other Middle Eastern cuisines (86.6 percent)
French (86.3 percent)
Austrian (86.3 percent)
German cuisine, on the other hand, does less well.
Among the restaurants that serve local dishes, 71.3 percent were rated positively.
This puts Germany in 27th place.
The Taste Atlas
, which evaluated in December 2023 which national cuisines are the best worldwide,
came to a different conclusion .
The ranking is also based on online reviews, but includes restaurants around the world.

The evaluation was based on more than 270,000 reviews of dishes and more than 80,000 reviews of food.
The 50 best dishes or products from each country were then identified and the average rating was calculated.
Italy is at the top, closely followed by Japan and Greece.
Germany, however, ends up in a similar place: the local cuisine is number 32
in the
Taste Atlas ranking.

Even if German cuisine is neither the first choice here nor in other nations, there are of course also places abroad that serve currywurst, sauerkraut and fried potatoes.
According to Preply
's evaluation,
the restaurants with the best German food are in Greece.
Not a single German restaurant in the Mediterranean country was awarded less than four stars in the study.
So one hundred percent had a positive rating.
The rate is similarly high in Portugal (92 percent) and Croatia (91.7 percent).
For this part of the study, the language platform evaluated restaurant reviews in which the keyword “German” was mentioned at least five times.
