2 / 9The Akita Inu is a Japanese breed of dog.

It is not only one of the largest, but also one of the oldest breeds.

The first dogs of this kind are said to have existed in Japan over 8,000 years ago.

The loyal four-legged friend became famous in the 2009 film “Hachiko – A Wonderful Friendship” with Richard Gere.

The strip tells the story of the Japanese Akita Inu Hachikō, who accompanied his owner to Shibuya Station in Tokyo every day in the 1920s and always picked him up again at the same time in the evening.

After his master's death, Hachikō waited for his master's return every day for almost ten years - until his own death.

A bronze statue and the name “Hachikō Exit” for the west exit of the station now commemorate the famous Akita.

Dogs have accompanied humans for around 15,000 years.

During this long period of time, numerous mixtures and breedings emerged among the four-legged friends, all of which descended from wild wolf populations.

Today, according to the

Fédération Cynologique Internationale

(FCI), there are 370 (including provisionally) recognized dog breeds (as of February 2024).

However, the numbers vary depending on the organization.

The number of dog breeds existing worldwide is estimated at around 800.
