Spicy coriander gives dishes an Asian touch.

Even beginners can easily grow the herb on the windowsill, in the garden or on the balcony.

Coriander isn't for everyone, but those who like Asian cuisine often learn to love the distinctive tasting and smelling herb.

The usually annual plant can also be easily grown yourself - and kept on the windowsill all year round or continued to be cultivated on the balcony or in the garden.

If you don't harvest the whole coriander and let it flourish over the summer, you can even wait for the flowers to form from June and then harvest the seeds of the plant, the coriander grains.

Dried, these can be used as a spice.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is an undemanding, fast-growing plant, making it one of the herbs that makes cultivation easy even for beginners.

The best time for sowing is from March indoors or from the end of April to June in the bed.

It can also be used all year round on the windowsill.

The germination temperature should be around 20 degrees Celsius.

Since the seeds are considered dark germinators, they should be covered with about one centimeter of soil.

Coriander has the following requirements in terms of location and care:

  • Substrate: permeable sowing or herb soil, mixed with sand if possible or with compost in the bed.

  • Location: sunny to partially shaded, protected from wind.

  • Watering: Avoid waterlogging and dryness, always allow the top layer of soil to dry before the next watering.

  • Fertilizing: not necessary outdoors, fertilize regularly in pots.

A lot of sun is needed to harvest seeds

If you later want to harvest the seeds from the coriander, it should definitely be placed in a sunny spot with loose, lime-rich soil.

About five months after sowing, which in this case should be no later than May, you can harvest the coriander seeds as soon as they are light brown.

They then need to be dried, preferably hanging on the flower stem in an airy, dry place.
