An investigation into injuries was opened by the Venice Public Prosecutor's Office following the complaint of a prisoner who said he had been severely beaten by some officers from the Santa Maria Maggiore prison.
The 23-year-old, originally from Eastern Europe, was then transferred from Venice to the Montorio prison in Verona, where doctors found his serious condition - he also had internal bleeding - ordering his emergency admission to hospital.
The young man reported to his lawyer what had happened to him, and so the prosecutor received a complaint against three prison police officers.
The young man's lawyer, Anna Osti, said that the 23-year-old is still hospitalized in Verona because the health workers believe he is too fragile to be sent back to prison.
The boy, in prison for armed robbery, remained in intensive care for a few days.
One of the aspects to be clarified concerns the authorization - also relating to the health conditions of the inmate - which must always be given for the transfer of prisoners from one penitentiary to another.
The alleged 'punitive expedition' was apparently triggered after the young man staged a protest, setting fire to some newspapers in his cell.
