2023 marked a sales record for Cuban cigars abroad, with a turnover of 721 million dollars, 31% more than that of 2022. The figure emerged during the 24th Habano Festival, which opened yesterday at Havana is considered the largest global event dedicated to smoking.
In 2022, Habanos SA (the joint company that distributes and sells the famous Cuban cigars around the world) had recorded a turnover of 545 million dollars, just above that of the previous year, which occurred in the midst of the pandemic.
“This is impressive growth,” acknowledged the company's co-president, Luis Sánchez-Harguindey, who attributed the phenomenon to their brand strengthening strategies and dozens of launches.
One in particular concerned the Cohiba brand, destined for China in commemoration of the Year of the Rabbit.
Indeed, Beijing has consolidated itself as one of the most dynamic markets, explained the company manager, who maintains a monopoly on the marketing of the island's famous cigars such as Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Hoyos de Monterrey or Partagás.
Followed by Spain, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom.
