With their beautiful black and white costume, their short, rounded tail and their long pointed beak, the Common Guillemots look like little penguins.
They also stand upright like him when they rest on the ground.
But it is face down, on the beaches or rocky coasts of the French coast, that volunteers from the Bird Protection League (LPO) have been finding these offshore birds for several weeks.
“The data collected since the start of the year thanks to our volunteers clearly indicates high mortality, with nearly 250 murres stranded, including 172 since the beginning of February,” specifies the League.
The carcasses spotted appear particularly thin.
» “For five weeks, our teams have been patrolling the beaches of Vendée and we have counted more than 130 corpses of guillemots on a single portion of 120 km of beaches,” adds the French branch of the environmental association Sea Shepherd.
