Exercising in the fresh air is healthy.

If you are stressed, you should try a long walk, a jog or a picnic with friends in the park.

Leisure activities in the countryside have been proven to lower cortisol levels and therefore bring relaxation.

However, if you live in a big city, it's sometimes quite a distance to the next park or green space.

A study by a US research group now shows that more green spaces in cities would be worthwhile.

More green in life has a positive effect on people's health.

Trends like forest bathing, where people go into the forest, meditate and consciously get in touch with nature, are no longer uncommon.

Sport, meeting friends for a walk or simply quietly observing nature also brings relaxation and happiness to people - this has been scientifically proven for a long time.

A new study from the USA now shows that there is a correlation between cities with lots of green spaces and the mental health of the people living there.

The researchers used the so-called Nature Score to achieve this finding.

This is a collection of data that includes information such as air pollution, the number of parks and tree canopies, and noise and light pollution.

Each area examined by Nature Score receives a score from 1 to 100 based on this data collection.

Texas under the microscope

For the study, the scientists examined the state of Texas, which is rich in cities of different sizes.

First, they looked at the number of people who were being treated for depressive disorders or anxiety, for example.

According to

Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk

, they then assigned those treated to their respective postal codes and examined the applicable Nature Score.

The higher the Nature Score of an area, the lower the number of people being treated for mental illness.

So this shows that there is a correlation between green spaces like parks and trees and people's mental health.

However, it is important to note that this does not show causality.

This means that it cannot be concluded from this study that green spaces are the cause of people's better health. The study only provides an indication that there is a connection between the two factors.
