And suddenly, a new Cézanne appeared in Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône).
A hidden treasure.
It is not a Sainte-Victoire from the master's last years (1839-1906) but a hitherto unknown work by a 20-year-old artist, which the workers responsible for the restoration of the family bastide of Jas-de- Bouffan discovered them last August under layers of plaster.
These five to six square meters of an original fresco unearthed in the large living room are undoubtedly the very first panel that Cézanne painted at home: with a sky spread across the entire width of the wall, banners and boat masts , it most likely represents the entrance to a port.
Returning from Paris, where he discovered Impressionism, he created two new paintings over this first work, the entire center of which has now disappeared.
