United we win.
But unity is not always within reach.
After Alessandra Todde's victory in Sardinia, the centre-right and centre-left are trying to unite as much as possible in view of the next regional elections, from Abruzzo to Piedmont via Umbria and Basilicata.
But national balancing acts and local obstacles often slow down the objective
.
Here is the situation, Region by Region, of the realities that will vote by 2024. Next year it will be the turn of other Regions, including Emilia Romagna and Veneto, the territory in which the third mandate match will be played.
ABRUZZO
- Voting takes place on Sunday 10 March and there are two candidates: the outgoing governor
Marco Marsilio for the centre-right;
and the former rector of the University of Teramo, Luciano D'Amico
for the progressive camp.
Marsilio, very loyal to Giorgia Meloni, in 2019 obtained 48% of the votes, becoming the first regional president of Fratelli d'Italia.
D'Amico gathers around him a very large field that goes from the Democratic Party to Action and up to the 5 Stars. If Salvini said he was "absolutely optimistic" about the centre-right's victory, the centre-left hopes for a domino effect after Todde's victory in Sardinia .
BASILICATA
- Voting will take place on 21 and 22 April.
For the centre-right, the re-nomination of the outgoing governor Vito Bardi (Forza Italia),
initially questioned by the League,
is strengthened .
FdI, through Giovanni Donzelli, announced the decision "very soon".
The situation of the
center-left and the candidacy of Angelo Chiorazzo
is more complex .
The Lucanian entrepreneur, who has been in the field for months, is waiting to become the coalition's candidate.
His name finds the support of the Democratic Party and other centre-left political forces, but not yet that of the M5s.
Action, however, expressed its opposition, Iv proposed primaries.
UMBRIA
- There could be a large camp led by the Pd and M5s competing for the centre-right region in Umbria.
The Northern League member
Donatella Tesei,
already indicated by Matteo Salvini as a candidate for reconfirmation, five years ago conquered what had always been a fiefdom of the centre-left.
Sources from the various coalition parties continue to assure that no names have yet been discussed but Tesei's re-nomination appears to be the most probable at the moment.
The mayor of Terni and leader of Alternativa Popolare,
Stefano Bandecchi
, is the only one to have already indicated his candidate for president for the Region,
Riccardo Corridore.
The center-left does not yet have an official name but has already begun to define the coalition, a broad field with the Pd and M5s.
The name of the current mayor of Assisi Stefania Proiett
i, an expression of the civic world, is insistently circulating as a possible candidate for the leadership of the Region
.
PIEDMONT
-
The Italian governor Alberto Cirio has been at the helm of the Region for five years and
is considered a strong candidate for an encore.
The opposition front is much more problematic, with the Pd and M5s remaining distant for now.
Time and national dynamics, however, should bring advice and - once the grievances of Appendino's season as mayor of Turin are over - push for a rapprochement between the two main forces opposed to the centre-right.
The meetings, which have already begun some time ago, will continue in the next few days.
