Some shrubs and fruit trees require proper pruning in March.

We'll show you where it's worth it before it gets warmer again.

Kassel - Even if many garden owners still shy away from it: careful pruning is good for most plants in the garden.

For some fruit trees and shrubs, March is exactly the right time.

We'll tell you what plants these are and what you need to pay attention to.

Then spring can come – even if a surprising change in the weather is apparently imminent.

Four fruit trees that are suitable for pruning in March

To ensure that the trees in your home garden bear as many juicy fruits as possible in summer, proper pruning in March is essential.

Stone fruit in particular, such as strong-growing pear trees, depend on it.

During maintenance pruning, competing shoots, water shoots and over-aged branches are removed.

This allows the pear to bloom profusely in spring and bear lots of fruit in summer.

Pruning an apple tree has the same goal.

The procedure is always: first cut off the thicker branches, then the thinner ones.

The branch can be sawed off at the branch ring, but not too close to the trunk.

If the maintenance cut has been missed for a few years, a more severe rejuvenation cut may be necessary.

Berry bushes also enjoy having their branches cut in March

Grape vines should also be trimmed every year before the arrival of spring.

To ensure that the fruit shoots grow vigorously in spring, only the one or two strongest ones should be left standing.

Important: the branches should only be removed later in spring if they are not yet woody.

Certain plants and herbs should also be sown in March.

In order for the autumn varieties of raspberries to develop proper canes, a strong cut is also recommended.

The plant should be cut completely down to ground level.

The strongest shoots are only selected in spring; all others continue to be shortened.

These four ornamental trees are best cut in March

For lush flowers, you can also use scissors on shrubs at the end of the first quarter, such as hibiscus.

Anyone who cuts off last year's flower shoots will be rewarded with many beautiful flowers in the summer.

According to

NDR,

the plant can tolerate being cut back by around a third.

A more intensive thinning cut prevents the hibiscus from growing too densely.

Hydrangeas also tolerate pruning before the start of spring.

While the panicle hydrangea can cope with severe pruning, the farmer's hydrangea reacts more sensitively;

If the pruning is too severe, the flowers may even fail.

For the panicle hydrangea, it is recommended to cut last year's flower shoots down to a few centimeters.

This procedure is also suitable for buddleia.

Wisteria should be cut in summer and March for beautiful flowers

Both in summer and before spring, it is best for enthusiasts to prune wisteria.

The spent shoots should be cut back in March to two or three buds towards the branch.
