Flights are, by and large, a safe thing. But have you ever asked yourself why flight attendants put their hands under their hips when they are sitting on take-off and landing? Watch Walla! tourism

Although flights are a very safe thing, there are also rarely unplanned situations that may cause danger to the plane and its passengers, such as severe weather, or preparation for an emergency landing due to malfunctions.

When a plane is taking off or landing, these are the most critical moments for the safety of the plane.

"Have you ever wondered why the flight attendants sit on their hands during takeoff and landing?"

asked Henny Lim, a Cebu Pacific airline flight attendant in the Philippines, in a post she uploaded to Tiktok.

"This is 'emergency position (Bryce)'".

In a video that has already garnered more than 31,000 views, Lim, 29, revealed the secrets of the fascinating safety procedures she and her colleagues are required to follow to reduce the risk of bodily harm in an emergency.

"This position involves wearing (your) seat belt securely, sitting upright on your hands - palms up, thumbs bent and hands relaxed - and placing your feet close to the floor," the flight attendant explained.

"The goal is to keep the body in a rigid position, so that if there is any impact from an unplanned emergency, the body will be less damaged."

Silently memorize the emergency procedure

Lim and her co-worker demonstrated the special position, strapping themselves into the crew seats and placing their hands under their hips.

"It keeps the movement of the body limited, so there is less chance of injury if there is an impact," she said in the clip, adding that the cabin crew doesn't just sit on their hands during an emergency in the air.

"During this time, we also quietly memorize an emergency situation procedure, which prepares for an emergency situation during the entire takeoff and landing," Lim said.

"This includes awareness of emergency equipment in place, actions to open the door, the commands given and any visual cue that can give information outside the plane."

And while the surfers were shocked by the new discovery, there were those who felt sorry for the flight attendants who fly all the time and the "scary" pressure of having to constantly prepare for a crash.

An unidentified American Southwest Airlines flight attendant suffered a broken back when the plane touched down in a hard landing on the runway at Orange County, California, John Wayne Airport in July 2022. Also, earlier this year, five American Airlines flight attendants, as well as one passenger, were evacuated to the hospital with minor injuries after a "hard landing" at Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii, in January.
