After the agreement on the next Regions to vote, the centre-right still has to resolve the issue of the third mandate.

A more divisive issue than ever for FdI, Lega and Forza Italia which, precisely for this reason, could be postponed until after the European elections.

Having suffered the defeat in Sardinia, the mantra among the government allies is to remain united in view of the polls in Abruzzo, Basilicata, Umbria and Piedmont.

Or, at least, avoid transmitting to the outside world an image of quarrelsomeness and disagreement which - as we have seen - does not help the polls at all.

The match, however, intersects with that within the League, with a Venetian branch pushing for Luca Zaia's re-nomination also from an anti-Salvini perspective.

The first test will be the amendment for the third term of governors to the elections bill, expected in the Senate in mid-March.

The Northern League proposal, already rejected in the commission, could be re-presented in the hemicycle of Palazzo Madama on that occasion - as was initially almost taken for granted - or be put on stand-by.

The Northern League supporters who support this latest cause point out that facing a new rejection would certainly not help Zaia, while time could benefit more profitable agreements.

Hopefully in the majority, or, in the worst case scenario, with the Democratic Party, which - as is known - has different sensitivities on the topic.

In short, summarize sources close to the dossier, it is possible that the amendment of discord will be postponed, also because the electoral appointment in Veneto is more than a year away.

"We are evaluating the opportunity to re-present the amendment for the third term", says Northern League senator Paolo Tosato.

Who, immediately afterwards, adds: "We remain of the opinion that taking away from citizens the ability to confirm a well-liked governor who has administered well is a mistake".

Having said that, according to some rumours, Salvini's party has also put on the table the possibility of a name for Veneto alternative to that of Zaia.

"Our goal is to return to being the first party, also winning the 2025 regional elections with one of our candidates", says - without specifying - the secretary of the Veneto League Alberto Stefani.

And Matteo Salvini himself from Desenzano del Garda reiterates: "It is right that if a mayor is good he can be re-elected, just like a governor. What if the discussion on the third mandate will be postponed until after the European elections? I don't know. In my opinion it is it is right that the mayors continue to work and the governors too" Certainly Salvini also has to deal with the internal criticism, more or less veiled, coming from the Veneto.

Last weekend, Luca Zaia's withdrawal from the League's political school in Rome did not go unnoticed.

Even if the next day Salvini himself threw water on the fire: "They try to make us argue" but "this morning the first phone call was with Zaia", he said, addressing the journalists present.

Yet, a wing of the League close to the Venetian governor no longer does anything to hide the disappointment of electoral results below expectations.

On the third mandate, for now, the position of Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia does not change.

For FdI, what is in question is not the goodness of Zaia's work - an esteemed governor - but the third mandate itself, which requires in-depth reflection.

In the very short term, for Giorgia Meloni's party there is an objective that absolutely cannot be missed: the reconfirmation of Marco Marsilio in Abruzzo.

A result taken for granted until a few weeks ago, after Alessandra Todde's victory in Sardinia a little less so.

For Marsilio the three center-right leaders will return to march together again.

Under the radar, however, the internal competition continues, with the League moving forward to take charge of the doubling of the Rome-Pescara railway line.

An announcement that came while Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was still chairing CIPES.
