Pad Thai is the national dish of Thailand and coats flat rice noodles in all flavors thanks to tamarind paste, chicken breast, soy sauce and sugar.
Anyone who has ever been to Thailand already knows the popular national dish: Pad Thai.
And the dish is also known outside of Thailand, and its distinctive taste comes from one ingredient in particular: tamarind paste.
It is made from the fruit of the tamarind tree, which is native to Africa.
The seasoning paste is known for its sweet and sour profile, which is often described as a combination of dates and citrus fruits.
Ingredients such as soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, chicken and lime juice bring the flavors salty, sweet, sour and umami into play.
Thai cuisine thrives on balanced taste profiles, which are expressed through a balance of aromas.
That's why it's hardly surprising that Pad Thai is promoted as THE Thai dish par excellence.
But other dishes, such as the chicken and coconut soup Tom Kha Gai and different types of curry dishes, such as the Thai fish curry, show how sophisticated Thai cuisine can be.
This is how easy it is to prepare a traditional Pad Thai:
You need these ingredients for a Pad Thai:
Pad Thai sauce:
30 ml fish sauce
30 ml tamarind paste
30 ml soy sauce
20g sugar
