If you want to give your garden the finishing touches before the summer season, you only have until March 1st to do so.

Then pruning is prohibited.

From a meteorological point of view, spring begins on March 1st every year.

This date is an important deadline for pruning hedges, because from then on major interventions with scissors in the garden are prohibited until September 30th.

This is intended to protect birds and other animals that nest and raise their young in hedges and bushes in spring.

Cutting back the branches too much could not only significantly disturb the animals, but in the worst case scenario it could also destroy their nest.

This is still allowed until March 1st

If you want to take advantage of the last beautiful days of February in the garden, you should primarily do the major pruning work.

So now there is still time to trim the neighbor's hedge, shape the fruit tree or reduce the size of the large bush in the garden.

However, you should under no circumstances dump the resulting garden waste in the forest.

The cuttings belong in the compost or in the organic waste bin.

The

Federal Nature Conservation Act

will make a tough cut on March 1st.

From this date, large pruning is prohibited.

And anyone who doesn't comply will have to pay.

According to the

catalog

of fines, the amount of the fine is different in each federal state.

Here are three examples:

  • In Saarland, depending on the size of the pruning, up to 10,000 euros can be incurred after March 1st.

  • In North Rhine-Westphalia, the fine for a prohibited pruning of over 100 meters is up to 12,500 euros.

  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is taking particularly tough measures: there, if you cut back after March 1st, you pay up to 100,000 euros, depending on the extent.

It is therefore worth using the hedge trimmer before March 1st.

But the hedge trimmer doesn't have to sit in the garden shed collecting dust all summer long.

According to Öko-Test,

topiary cuts are also permitted

after February .

Topiary pruning means that you can, for example, cut back branches that are growing out.

These are minor interventions that do not affect the substance of the greenery.

Another exception applies if construction work is planned.

In this case, you can completely remove hedges and other larger trees from March to September.

Each federal state also has different tree protection regulations, which also contain further exceptions.

If in doubt, you can get further information there, for example if branches of your tree protrude into the neighboring property.
