Giuseppe Sorbello, former regional councilor and former mayor of Melilli, a town in the Syracuse area, is one of the 12 arrested as part of the Asmundo operation by the Carabinieri of Syracuse as part of an investigation coordinated by the magistrates of the third area of the Catania District Attorney's Office.
According to the accusation, Sorbello, in the 2022 administrative elections in Melilli, would have "accepted the promise of obtaining votes in exchange for money and a commitment to work to facilitate the release of the son of an affiliate".
The elections were won by the current mayor, Giuseppe Carta, regional deputy of the MPA with 75 percent of the vote.
